چکیده

Air turbulence is a serious problem that affects airline operations. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is developing an airborne Doppler LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) for on-board turbulence detection. Flight experiments demonstrated that a highaltitude prototype can measure wind speeds at the more than 9 km range at altitude of 12 km. This paper describes the development of the airborne Doppler LIDAR and presents sample high-altitude flight experiment results.

Azimuth-Variant Signal Processing in High-Altitude Platform Passive SAR with Spaceborne/Airborne Transmitter

High-altitude platforms (HAP) or near-space vehicle offers several advantages over current low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and airplane, because HAP is not constrained by orbital mechanics and fuel consumption. These advantages provide potential for some specific remote sensing applications that require persistent monitoring or fast-revisiting frequency. This paper investigates the azimuth-vari...

Airborne and Spaceborne Lidar

The evolution of lidar, from those early ground-based measurements to our first long-duration spaceborne experiments, is schematically represented in Fig. 13.1. It depicts the first lidars in the 1960s as ground-based, followed by systems first flown in 1969 on small aircraft, and followed in the late 1970s by lidars flown on large aircraft capable of long-range measurements. Starting in 1979, ...

P3a.7 Classification and Characterization of Tropical Precipitation Based on High-resolution Airborne Vertical-incidence Radar

High-altitude airborne measurements of vertical incidence radar reflectivity and radial velocity are analyzed for some 21,231 km of flight tracks over tropical precipitation systems. The radar, the ER-2 Doppler radar (EDOP), was flown in three campaigns in central Florida, Brazil (near Ji Parana in the southeastern Amazon), and over hurricanes. The strength of the radar dataset lies in its supe...

Improved detection of atmospheric turbulence with SLODAR.

We discuss several improvements in the detection of atmospheric turbulence using SLOpe Detection And Ranging (SLODAR). Frequently, SLODAR observations have shown strong ground-layer turbulence, which is beneficial to adaptive optics. We show that current methods which neglect atmospheric propagation effects can underestimate the strength of high altitude turbulence by up to ~ 30%. We show that ...

Clear Air Turbulence Detection and Characterisation in the Delicat Airborne Lidar Project

We report on a development of a long-range airborne UV high spectral resolution lidar, intended for the detection and characterisation of clear air turbulence (CAT). The detection of turbulence is based on the measurement of density fluctuations associated with the movement of turbulent air masses. These density fluctuations are measured by the variations in the molecular backscatter coefficien...
